Fundraising Online

Online fundraising is rapidly replacing traditional methods of fundraising, like direct mail and door to door solicitation.  For the nonprofit organization, online fundraising offers substantial benefits, such as lower costs, easy administration and database functions built into website applications.  Donors find giving online to be convenient and easy.  Tax receipts can be issued immediately and delivered by email, making this function convenient for both the donor and the charity.

In order to fundraise online, an organization should:

  • create an attractive and informative website;
  • provide a reason for people to provide an email address, such as a newsletter sign-up or the offer of a free report, for the purpose of building a database;
  • have the ability to gather email addresses online;
  • have the ability to take credit card information online;
  • ideally have the ability to issue receipts and thank-you letters by email response;
  • and the privacy of donor information must be protected.
