Case Study 6

United Agencies is a social service organization that provides a variety of programs to individuals and families. UA provides counselling, health and wellness programs, support for people with special needs, and financial aid to people in crisis situations.

During their 60 year existence, there are few people in the community that have not been helped in one way or the other by UA. UA has an outstanding reputation in the community. Most of their operating funds come from the United Way and the Regional Health Authority. Agreements with these organizations prohibit UA from launching a major fundraising campaign that might compete with the United Way.

Some close supporters have made significant contributions to UA though and the organization has built up a reserve of $3 million over the years.  The UA Board has determined that their programs could be better if they had access to up to date social research. To achieve this end, the Board has decided that they will raise $500,000 a year to fund a research institute at the University.  They also wish to raise awareness of social issues that affect the community.  Your job is to recommend to the Board, the best plan to raise the money they need and meet the objective of raising awareness of social issues.
